My Biography
Alex Sánchez is the director of the department of public
relations and multicultural outreach for Austin Independent School District
since July 2011. He is charged with improving the school district’s
communications and community engagement strategies to build stronger links with
employees, families and the community.
A native Spanish speaker, Sánchez hosts Educa con Alex Sánchez, a talk show on
commercial radio aimed at better integrating Spanish-dominant families to
Austin’s education system. Sánchez launched the same radio strategy in Denver in
2009, receiving national recognition as one of the “best big city policies in
America” for improving parental engagement in an innovative way.
Before moving to Austin, Sánchez held two senior cabinet positions with
Denver Public Schools and a rewarding career representing
pharmaceutical-giant Pfizer, Inc. in several U.S. cities.
A first-generation Mexican-American, Sánchez maintains strong ties with
local non-profit organizations advocating for human rights, social justice and
education in Texas and Colorado. Sánchez
is past chairman of the former Latin American Research and Service Agency
(LARASA) and a founding member of the Colorado Latino Forum. He currently serves on the boards of the
National Hispanic Children’s Institute out of San Antonio, Texas and Communities
in Schools of Central Texas.
Sánchez is a graduate of Colorado Mountain College and Colorado State University. A first in his family to graduate from college, Sánchez was named Distinguished First Generation Scholar by Colorado State University. Sánchez is a 2006 Mexican-American Solidarity Foundation Senior Fellow.
A son of immigrants, Sánchez grew up in a small rural town in Mexico until the age of 10. He calls Basalt, Colorado his hometown, the place where he graduated from high school and spent most of his youth. Sánchez is a resident of the Golden Triangle/Alma neighborhood in Denver, Colorado. He lives fulltime in Austin, Texas.
